
The Faculty of Engineering and Science at Aalborg University (AAU) is looking for a committed and visionary leader for the Department of Materials and Production, a department head who can advance the department and unleash its full potential. As head of department, you will be an integral part of the management at a well-consolidated, development-oriented faculty and department, internationally leading in several areas. The position begins 1 March 2022. The place of employment is in Aalborg, where the department has its main activities. The department is one of five departments at The Faculty of Engineering and Science. Department of Materials and Production is a wide-ranging international research and educational environment at Aalborg University. The Department’s mission is to meet the future’s demands for new materials and production systems by directing the whole value chain from basic material understanding, materials’ applications in mechanical constructions, industrial production and management. The department is well positioned to address societal grand challenges and has established the foundations for interdisciplinary research and problem solving in this regard. This potential will be unleased during the coming years and in this respect, you will as head of department be acting as a driving force. The department has several strong, international and innovative research groups, which comprise everything from basic science to strategic and applied research. The activities encompass research as well as education within materials, mechanics, physics, production technology, and industrial management and innovation. The department’s activities are supported by world-class laboratories. The department has 150 employees, including 30 PhD students. In 2020, the department had a turnover of DKK 119 million, 43 of which came from external research activities.

The head of department must work on the basis of AAU’s strategy and core values, which emphasize problem orientation, interdisciplinarity and innovation. Creativity, openness and collaboration are also the university’s special characteristics, which carry the university’s vision of being among the internationally leading innovative universities as well as being known for advanced teaching and interdisciplinary research environments.
As head of department, you will be part of the faculty management. This means you will be involved in the strategic development of the university and the faculty where emphasis is on the green transition, the quality of the research and the research-based teaching, and external funding of research projects, both nationally and internationally. It is your responsibility to ensure implementation of the faculty strategy in the department and to facilitate collaboration across the university.
Furthermore, you are responsible for the department’s academic, financial and personnel strategy and management. You must be able to demonstrate and communicate a strategic direction in collaboration with the management team. In addition, you must maintain and further develop the department as an attractive, strong international research environment with a good working environment for all employees. To that end, it is essential that you ensure positive, inspiring leadership, that you listen openly and communicate clearly, and that you can lead an interdisciplinary organisation with staff members of different research areas.
As head of department, you are also in charge of developing and qualifying the educational programs in good keeping with the research and in dialogue with researchers and students.
You are representing the department internally and externally, and you must be able to establish, maintain and develop effective partnerships with internal as well as external collaborators as well as with national and international partners.
Qualification requirements
You must be an internationally recognised researcher at least at the associate professor level or equivalent, have insight into the department’s academic areas and possess the desire to lead. You must have experience with leadership and personnel management where actual training in the area is an advantage.
You are expected to understand the interaction between research, higher education and society. You can document results from research in collaboration with the wider world and have a solid knowledge of several of the academic areas that comprise the department at both the national and international level. If you have a strong international research and funding network, it will be a great advantage.
As a person, you have good leadership and collaboration skills. You are able to navigate in an internationally oriented university environment, and you have good strategic instincts with the ability to read society’s future needs in research, education and knowledge exchange.
You strive to lead the way and map out goals and frameworks for education, research and external cooperation. In addition, the ability to support and drive internationalisation at the department as well as the faculty level is expected. Finally, you are expected to have strong communication skills, to be assertive and to have the ability to make decisions and follow through with decisive action in a complex organisation.

LØN OG ANSÆTTELSESVILKÅR
Agreement
The employment is based on a five-year contract, with the possibility of extending the position for an additional three years without reposting the position. It will be possible to negotiate a limited time for research in this position.
Employment will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s circular about the Agreement for Publicly Employed University Graduates and the associated protocol about Head of Departments and Deans at universities and the Ministry of Finance’s Circular about tenure agreement.
There will be an opportunity to negotiate a qualifications-based supplement. An agreement may be entered into a post-position as associate professor or professor at the end of the tenure period. Employment in a post-position can take place after a positive professional assessment in accordance with The Ministerial Order on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities and the ministerial order on the appointment of academic staff at the universities (the appointment order).
The place of work will be in Aalborg. The position is at full time position, and the employment commences 1 March 2022.
